Beyond the Page

I turned the pages
Until I could turn no more,
Worn and torn
Damp from finger-licking turns
Musty from breathing life
Into clinging pages

At last I stopped
Resigned to read
The same page
Over and over again
Until my eyes blurred
And every line
Could be spoken from memory

Finally it dawned on me,
Stop reading
And start listening
To the words
Until they become a voice,
See beyond the page
Grow in deeper sight
And gather strength,
Now tingling ears
Listening to the tune.

Beyond the Page explores the shift from merely gathering information to experiencing transformation. Initially, the speaker attempts to master the printed page through repetitive reading. However, they soon realize that truth is not reqalized by turning pages, but by allowing words to penetrate the heart. True understanding requires pausing to reflect and listen deeply, rather than counting the volume of pages completed. Ultimately, this poem reminds us that wisdom comes from a willingness to hear the enduring voice speaking through the text. This poem echoes biblical themes such as:
“Faith comes from hearing…” (Romans 10:17)
“Be doers of the word…” (James 1:22–25)
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
